Starting in the 2024-25 school year, the term "English Language Learner" (ELL) is being replaced by the broader term: "English as an Additional Language" (EAL) to better reflect the diverse language backgrounds of CBE students.
Alberta Education has also changed the term English as a Second Language (ESL) to EAL as it is a more inclusive term that applies to a wider range of students. This change was made to recognize and honour multilingual learners who may already speak multiple languages and are now learning English. The term "English as an Additional Language" more accurately encompasses the wide range of language experiences students bring to their learning journey.
As part of this transition, we will be updating references on CBE websites to reflect the new term and acronym. This includes updating program descriptions and new resource materials; however, historical documents will remain unchanged.
While terminology is changing, our targeted, explicit language development and instructional supports remain the same. Programming for EAL learners will continue to support and assist learners to develop their English language skills while they advance academically.
