The annual New Teacher Orientation has been underway all week, signifying the start to another year of learning and growing in Chinook's Edge.
Over thirty teachers who are either new to the profession or new to the division are taking part in what is considered to be one of the most extensive mentorship programs in the province. The four-day program increases new teachers' understanding of the culture and expectations in Chinook's Edge, and provides time and support as they begin mapping out specific plans and goals for the school year. As part of an ongoing mentorship program, each new teacher also has the opportunity to be paired with a seasoned Chinook's Edge teacher to share ongoing support, encouragement and professional development.
"I grew up with teachers around me, so I know they are collaborative, kind and helpful by nature," said Emma Turville, Bowden Grandview School's new Grade 8 teacher. She is the daughter of Janice Gallant, who has taught at École Deer Meadow School in Olds for over 10 years.
"I graduated from Olds High and worked in several different Chinook's Edge schools as a substitute teacher last year, so becoming a full time teacher in this division feels like coming home to me. There is one hundred percent support and goodwill among everyone I have been working with this week. Everyone wants us to do well and I feel so well prepared to enter my classroom. I really can't wait to meet my students!" said Emma.
"I always knew I wanted to work around kids and I'm so excited to be teaching in Bowden - being in a K-12 school is like being part of a neighbourhood where you get to really watch these kids grow up. I love the energy and optimism that students have, and I appreciate that every day will be different from the day before. Mostly, I feel honoured to be working in a profession where you have the opportunity to literally change someone's life. If you are that one teacher who a student really connects with and they know you totally believe in them, imagine the power you have to make a true impact!"
Dr. Lissa Steele, Associate Superintendent of Learning Services, has been impressed with the level of collaboration among this group of teachers.
"They created a community with one another on the very first day, and they are already sharing resources and support," said Lissa. "We have a strong group of professionals and they came prepared to work hard. They seem to be eager and excited to do the best work they possibly can for kids - impacting students and their learning is truly their priority."
The first day of school for students in Chinook's Edge is September 1st.
