Students at Rothesay Elementary help Newcomers to Canada through Project Based Learning

April 6, 2016

Preceding the arrival of several newcomers to our community, the students in Mr. Kierstead's Grade 3 and Mrs. Guest's Grade 4 classes at Rothesay Elementary School wanted to help support those families.  Through a Project Based Learning experience, the students used the driving question, "What can we do to help newcomers to our community?"  The students brainstormed ideas and decided to hold events for the entire month of February, calling it "Sweetheart Month".  During this month the students made and sold valentines, held a sock-hop, had crazy hair day, pajama day, and an estimation guess jar.  As a result of their hard work and dedication, the students raised an outstanding $1038.80!  The students met with Jeff Matheson from the English Learning Centre in Saint John and brainstormed how they would use the funds that were raised.  The students decided to purchase grocery gift cards along with home-made welcoming cards that will be given out to families when they arrive to the YMCA.
