At the Board of Trustees meeting on October 16, 2023, the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) released its Disproportionality Data Report. This report was released as part of HWDSB's data collection, integration, and reporting commitments, as outlined in HWDSB's Equity Action Plan.
"We know that academic achievement and student well-being are directly tied to the learning and experiences students receive in schools, and that systemic inequities present in education and society in general can cause disproportionalities to occur," said Dawn Danko, Chair of the Board. "It's an important consideration for us as we map out our strategic priorities under the new multi-year strategic plan."
The Disproportionality Data Report combines data collected from the We All Count: HWDSB Student Census with system data in four distinct categories including suspensions, attendance, academic achievement, and well-being. The reported outcomes are directly related to the learning and experiences students receive in schools.
The report includes suspension and expulsion data previously reported at the Board Meeting on June 19, 2023. The full Disproportionality Data Report can be found on the HWDSB website at https://www.hwdsb.on.ca/about/equity/we-all-count-hwdsb-student-census-2021/disproportionality/.
"Providing equitable quality education is one of our five new strategic directions in our Multi-Year Strategic Plan, so understanding this data is critical," said Sheryl Robinson Petrazzini, Director of Education. "Awareness of disproportionalities allows us to better target our programs and services to ensure that we are meeting the needs of all students, but especially those who have been underserved."
