The Learners Early Access Program (LEAP) proudly celebrated its third cohort of graduates as 16 Grade 11 and 12 students from Peel District School Board (PDSB) earned their first university credits. Through the program, the students successfully obtained a micro-credential in project management and are now planning their next steps in their post-secondary journey.

Launched in September 2023, the partnership between PDSB and Algoma University reflects a shared commitment to breaking down systemic barriers that lead to disproportionalities within education through supporting secondary school students. Through LEAP, public high school students spend one semester on the Brampton Algoma University campus taking both high school and university courses. It allows students the opportunity to enroll in university courses such as Canadian Business and ESports as well as competing alongside Algoma University students in Case Competitions. To further support their academic journey, Algoma University offers LEAP alumni a $6,000 grant, distributed over their first two years, if they choose to pursue post-secondary studies at the university.
"The dedication and hard work behind LEAP have been truly transformative, equipping our secondary school students with the skills and mindset needed for life beyond graduation," said PDSB's Director of Education, Rashmi Swarup. "It's been incredible to witness the growing sense of energy and possibility within them - there is a shared belief that everything is within reach. As the students step into post-secondary environments, they'll do so with the confidence and preparation to fully embrace the opportunities ahead. This is the vision we have always had for them, and seeing it come to life is nothing short of inspiring."
LEAP prioritizes students from marginalized and equity deserving communities, including Black and Indigenous students, providing access to an immersive university experience they may not have otherwise considered. The program also provides guidance to help students navigate the transition to post-secondary education with confidence.
"Today's celebration is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together to support students throughout their educational journey. We are incredibly proud of this graduating cohort and the transformative partnership between Algoma University, PDSB, and Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB), which continues to open doors and create pathways to post-secondary success," said Dave Trudelle, Associate Vice-President, Student Affairs, Algoma University.
LEAP Students have access to a dedicated, state of the art space at Algoma University's Brampton Campus, where they are fully integrated into campus life. They benefit from the same student services available to all Algoma University students including free tutoring, mental health support, recreation facilities and a great line up of student events.
As the LEAP program continues to grow it increasingly attracts more students from multiple secondary schools while adapting to the needs of secondary age learners seeking post-secondary experience. Providing students with opportunities for development instills the confidence they need to make significant strides towards a successful future.
