Simcoe County District School Board - Organics collection pilot program to launch in four Barrie schools

March 20, 2018

On March 19, the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) is launching an organics collection pilot project with Waste Connections, an integrated solid waste services company, in four schools in Barrie.

The pilot project will encourage waste diversion, while teaching students and staff about strategies such as reduce, reuse and recycle. The project will also divert significant amounts of food waste from going to landfill, which is a significant source of methane gas and a potent greenhouse gas.

"We have successful organics collection programs running in many of our Simcoe County schools through municipal partnerships," says Kayla Kalalian, Environmental and Energy Systems Coordinator, SCDSB. "This pilot project presents an exciting opportunity for us to bring the organics collection program to Barrie and reduce our impact on the environment."

The four schools participating are Maple Grove Public School, Oakley Park Public School, Johnson Street Public School and Eastview Secondary School.

Maple Grove Public School's Environmental Cabinet students will facilitate classroom presentations to educate the school about the new program.
