Students and staff at twelve Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) schools are proud to have earned Healthy Schools certifications from Ophea. Ophea is a not-for-profit organization that champions healthy, active living in schools and communities and leads the provincial Healthy Schools initiative.
Ophea's Healthy Schools Certification recognizes and celebrates school communities for promoting and enhancing the health and well-being of students, school staff and the broader community. Participating schools complete the Six-Step Healthy Schools Process, which aligns with the Ministry of Education's Foundations for a Healthy School resource. Through a point-based system, schools plan their Healthy Schools process over the course of the school year, outlining the steps needed to achieve certification and apply to be certified as a gold, silver or bronze.
"I thank all of our SCDSB school communities for their continued dedication and commitment to physical and mental health and well-being," says Michael Giffen, Superintendent of Education. "I am pleased to recognize those schools who have been certified or have received gold status from Ophea."
This school year, Ophea modified their approach, certifying all schools who reported on steps one to four of the six-step process (regardless of point totals), and certifying all schools who met the minimum point total for certification (800 points) and passed an Ophea audit in May 2020 as gold.
