FROM MARCH 14TH TO 17TH
Bishop's University Drama and Music Departments collaborate to present a musical Spring Awakening

March 7, 2024

Students from the Drama and Music Departments at Bishop's University join voices and talents to present the eight-time Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening at Centennial Theatre from March 14th to 17th. Based on a play by Frank Wedekind, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik, Spring Awakening was the winner of eight Tony Awards in 2007, including Best New Musical, Best Direction, Best Book of a Musical and Best Score. Spring Awakening is presented in English with French surtitles.

Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion that are both funny and tragic. Inspired by a banned German play and set in 1890 in a conservative, ultra-religious town, the story follows young Wendla as she explores the mysteries of her body and wonders aloud where babies come from... Elsewhere, the brilliant and fearless young Melchior interrupts a mind-numbing Latin drill to defend his buddy, Moritz - a boy so traumatized by puberty that he can't concentrate on anything Melchior and Wendla meet by accident and soon find within themselves a desire unlike anything they've ever felt. As they fumble their way into one another's arms, Moritz flounders and soon fails out of school. And soon, Mama learns that her little Wendla is pregnant. Now the young lovers must struggle against all odds to build a world together for their child.

Following the success of Godspell (2022) and the sold-out run of The Drowsy Chaperone (2023), Bishop's Musical Theatre Concentration brings together Dr. Art Babayants, as Director, Set and Costume Designer, Nicolas Zemmour and Chantal Carrier, Choreographers. Musical Director and keyboardist Fannie Gaudette leads a live band of six musicians including Philippe Dunnigan (violin), Frédéric Bessozzi (cello), Pierre-Olivier Desilets (guitar), Justin Gauthier (bass) and Michael Rousseau (drum). The cast of fourteen features students from British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Alberta, Quebec, and the state of Vermont.

Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on March 14-15 and 16. On March 17th, the matinée show will begin at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online through LePointdevente or by calling the Centennial Theatre Box Office at 819-822-9692. Regular ticket prices are $30, $25 (60 years+), and 15$ for students with valid student card. VIP tickets are available for $50, and include special seating, a backstage tour, and a meeting with the cast.

This show is suited for an audience aged 14 years and over as it refers to sexual violence, incest, sex, sexuality, physical violence, abortion, suicide, and death.
