Canadian School Counselling Week 2025: Empowering Minds, Nurturing Futures

February 4, 2025

The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) is proud to announce Canadian School Counselling Week 2025, taking place from February 3-7, 2025. This year's theme, "Empowering Minds, Nurturing Futures," highlights the critical role of school counsellors in fostering student well-being, academic success, and holistic development.

School counsellors play a pivotal role in creating supportive school communities where every student can thrive. Their comprehensive approach to education emphasizes that academic achievement and mental health are deeply interconnected.

"School counsellors provide the essential bridge between students' personal well-being and their academic success through Comprehensive School Counselling programs and services and as part of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports," said Dr. Janice Graham-Migel, President of the School Counsellors Chapter of CCPA. "As members of a multi-disciplinary team and through early intervention, school counsellors support the mental health and well-being, life transition and career planning, and the learning and achievement of students."

Key Contributions of School Counsellors

  • Holistic Education Beyond Academics: School counsellors advocate for a comprehensive approach to education, addressing personal, social, and mental health needs, in addition to the educational and career development of students.  By doing so, they lay the groundwork for students' lifelong success.
  • Supporting Teachers, Enhancing Classrooms: By managing challenges that extend beyond academics, school counsellors support teachers, improve classroom engagement, and create safe and inclusive environments conducive to learning.
  • Advocates for Mental Health: School counsellors are champions for mental health, providing students with resources to navigate challenges and develop resilience. Early mental health interventions during childhood and adolescence contribute to positive outcomes that last a lifetime.

A Message to Educators

School counsellors are your partners in creating thriving learning environments. Together, we can address the diverse needs of students and prioritize their personal, social, educational, and career development, as well as their mental health and well-being.
