St. Clair Catholic has hired 29 post secondary students, who will begin training next week to perform duties as tutors at 17 schools across the district. It is the second year of the program, which is made possible by funding from the Ministry of Education.
"Tutoring offers these young adults an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a school setting, which will help them to discern their own future pathway," says Laura Callaghan, Superintendent of Education. "Many of them are headed for, or are already in, Faculty of Education programs at university, so this is a tremendous opportunity for them."
Catholic Curriculum staff for the Board will train the tutors over two days, providing strategies to guide their work, as they help students with one-on-one support in literacy and math. Following their training, the tutors will be in schools until June 22, 2023.
"The tutors also serve as another positive young adult role model for our young students, who enjoy spending time with them to practice and further develop their skills in literacy and numeracy," says Mrs. Callaghan. "They are a tremendous asset to our school communities!"
The tutor training will take place on Monday, May 1 and Tuesday, May 2 at the Catholic Education Centre, 420 Creek Street, Wallaceburg. A photo opportunity will be available on May 1 at 9:00 a.m. Members of the media are welcome.
