NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION
NLTA welcomes appointment of Teacher Allocation Review Committee

December 22, 2021

The Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association is pleased to see the long-overdue Teacher Allocation Review process begin with December 21's appointment of the committee members who will oversee this important work.

"The NLTA has been calling for the review of the Teacher Allocation Review for some time now, which by Cabinet directive should have occurred almost a decade ago. We are reviewing the committee information and terms of reference announced today (December 21)," said President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association, Trent Langdon. "We would have liked to have seen this process start earlier, and are concerned about what impact a report issued in May of 2022 will have for the 2022-23 school year. However, it is great to see this moving forward, and the Association is looking forward to fulsome, meaningful consultation and associated opportunities to be an active participant in the process."

The NLTA has been sounding the alarm about ongoing resourcing, staffing levels and class size and composition issues facing our members since September. We continue to call on government to address the serious issues in our classrooms right now, and not wait for the completion of the Teacher Allocation Review process.

"We are glad to see this announcement today (December 21), and hope the timeline will not prevent meaningful change, which is sorely needed before the start of the next school year," added President Langdon. "As well, it is also critical that this process should not distract from government taking steps to address the urgent needs in the system that exist in our schools now."
