OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD
ESTA's Automotive Program: Building Bridges Between Students and Industry

September 30, 2025

Sixteen OCSB students are taking their first big step toward a career in the skilled trades through the Elite Skilled Trades Academy's (ESTA) new Automotive Service Technician program. What makes this program special? It's more than just a class; it's a bridge between high school, college, and the workplace.

A First for the OCSB and Ontario

A one-of-a-kind program in the province, this is the first year the Automotive Service Technician program is being offered at the OCSB. Students begin at St. Paul High School, where they complete their first semester of focused automotive coursework. Then, in the second semester, they transition to Algonquin College for eight weeks of Level 1 Apprenticeship training. Along the way, they earn high school credits, gain hands-on experience through co-op placements, and start building their apprenticeship hours. It's a head start on a career in an industry where skilled workers are in demand.

Building Bridges Between Education and Employment

The program's launch was more than a celebration; it was a chance to connect. Over thirty-five local employers, including dealerships, independent repair shops, and automotive suppliers, came out to meet the students. Employers shared what they look for in apprentices, while students introduced themselves, their skills, and their career goals.

That exchange was powerful. It allowed students to practice networking while giving employers a first look at the next generation of technicians.

"The connections made tonight are invaluable," shared one organizer. "We're not just teaching skills; we're building a community and a pathway to the workforce." Industry partners are what make the Elite Skilled Trades Academy so effective."

Strong Community and Industry Support

The turnout of employers shows the strength of community partnerships in action. These employers aren't just supporting students for a night but investing in the future workforce. Many expressed excitement about bringing ESTA apprentices into their shops.

By building bridges between education and employment, ESTA is opening doors for students to thrive. It's an inspiring example of how OCSB's values Be Community, Be Well, Be Innovative come to life in programs that prepare students for bright futures.
