SUNCREST COLLEGE
Suncrest's Applied Research program gets boost from federal grant

December 13, 2023

Suncrest College has been awarded the Mobilize grant from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council, which will help support the development of Applied Research at the College.

The grant will total $1 million over the next five years for Suncrest College, which will immediately increase staffing capacity, along with enhancing Applied Research across the entirety of the Suncrest College region.

"Suncrest College is very happy to receive this grant, it will give the College many more opportunities to create workplace experiences for our students and to help local businesses and organizations grow with access to research services in the region," said Suncrest President & CEO, Alison Dubreuil.

Suncrest College has been involved in applied research, primarily in agriculture and education for the last decade. Suncrest College employs a team of 6 full-time researchers and has, in the past, had over 20 summer and part-time student research positions and partnerships with over 20 businesses and organizations to conduct projects. With the merger of legacy Parkland and legacy Cumberland Colleges, the funds will also allow for the extension of research services in the northern campuses, while strengthening available services in the south.

"We are so excited that this grant recognizes our past applied research work and the huge potential for impact in innovation in the Suncrest College region in the next five years," said Dr. Gwen Machnee, Suncrest's Applied Research Lead.

The Mobilize grants provide Canadian colleges with flexible funding to acquire necessary resources to address priorities in applied research in industry, health, public and not-for-profit organizations in the institution's communities, providing training opportunities for students.
