ALBERTA UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS
Alberta University of the Arts gifts public art to the City of Airdrie

October 4, 2019

On Saturday, September 28 representatives from the Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) will be in Airdrie for the unveiling and official handover of a special gift - a large, award-winning sculpture recently installed on the lawn of City Hall.

"We're so appreciative to be the recipient of this sculpture. Our connection with AUArts has really grown over the last few years and we look forward to continuing these types of partnerships that enhance the arts experience here in Airdrie," said Mayor Peter Brown. "We're proud to accept and display this well-known piece of work in our great City."

In the spring of 2019, the City of Airdrie accepted a public art donation from the Alberta University of the Arts, formerly the Alberta College of Art and Design. The work of art is an untitled metal sculpture created by Harold Weiss who won a 3rd year sculpture competition with the piece in the 1970's at the Alberta College of Art.

Many Airdrie residents who have attended concerts at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary may be familiar with the sculpture as it was a fixture along the walkway to the Jubilee for close to half a century.

"At Alberta University of the Arts we strongly believe in the role of public art which is to highlight moments in the landscape of our cities. It is out of a diverse array of public work that the depth and breadth of a community is expressed. AUArts is so proud to partner with the City of Airdrie so that this work continues to live on," said Dr. Daniel Doz, President and CEO of Alberta University of the Arts

Upon accepting this gifted artwork, Airdrie City Council and Administration worked with a committee of community members to determine where it would be placed, and ultimately the group decided on a location in front of City Hall.

The free community event to celebrate the unveiling will take place at City Hall during Alberta Culture Days on September 28 at 3:00 p.m. All area residents are inviting to attend, especially AUArts staff, alumni and students who live in the area.
