IWD profile: GBC's Munisha Basiram, Project Director of Congress 2025, highlights importance of strong role models

March 12, 2025

When Munisha Basiram, Project Director of Congress 2025, talks about her mother, she could very well be describing herself: "She's warm but strategic," says Basiram. "She's a hustler and knows how to get things done."

Basiram, who will soon be celebrating her two-year work anniversary at GBC in June, originally signed on as the college's manager of government relations. When the former director of Congress departed to pursue an external opportunity, Basiram was a natural match for the job.

"My background is in public policy and administration," she says. "Prior to GBC, I worked in federal advocacy in support of the mining sector and community benefits and lead conference-planning for the Indigenous program at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada."

Basiram works alongside Congress's Academic Convenor Dr. Margrit Talpalaru.

"It's such a wonderful team that has come together," says Basiram. "It has been an honour to work with Margit". "Margrit is a thoughtful, communications-focused leader, who fosters an environment of collaboration, empowering our team to showcase their skills and be their authentic selves."

Basiram presented her research with the Canadian Political Science Assocation at Congress at the University of British Columbia in 2019, while she was in the Ontario Legislature Internship Program.

"Leading Congress operations this year, alongside a great team, fills me with gratitude and feels like a full circle moment," she said.

The importance of strong role models

When asked to name female role models, Basiram doesn't hesitate.

"I know it sounds cheesy," she says, "but I have to say my mom. She's the matriarch of our family. She's action-oriented, has the biggest heart, and goes above and beyond for those she loves. She never misses a birthday!"

Laura Jamer, former director of government relations and Congress - and Basiram's former boss - is another source of inspiration.

"She's someone I really look up to professionally; she's an exceptional communicator, community builder, and problem solver, who cultivates deep relationships and truly engages people."

Basiram also credits Jamer with helping her overcome "imposter syndrome."

"She always said you've got this; we can figure this out.' She helped me learn to take risks, trust in myself and take action before overthinking something."

How are you celebrating International Women's Day (IWD)?

"I'll be having a girl's day with my mom and my future mother-in-law," says Basiram.
