The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has awarded the contract for the construction of the new K-12 school in Cartwright, Labrador. The contract valued at $38.4 million was awarded to JMJ Holdings Limited for the new school which will replace the existing Henry Gordon Academy, which opened in 1969.
The contract includes a three-phased approach:
- Construction of a new K-12 school with housing for teachers, community library, pre-kindergarten space and gym.
- Abatement and demolition of the existing school.
- Development of a new parking lot, as well as a field for play and sports in the area of the old school.
The Provincial Government is taking action to modernize school infrastructure, as it is critical to meeting the needs of students, teachers and communities across the province.
Budget 2025 provides support of $70.5 million for a number of school infrastructure projects, including $55.5 million for new schools in Cartwright, Paradise, Kenmount Terrace, and Portugal Cove-St. Philip's. This will help to enhance learning environments and outcomes for students, as well as improve their overall well-being.
