Residents looking to pursue a career in public safety will have an opportunity to receive training at a reduced cost through a new partnership between the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Atlantic Police Academy.
The Honourable John Hogan, KC, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, announced provincial support of up to $130,000 for 13 confirmed seats for Newfoundland and Labrador residents to obtain a Correctional Officer Certificate at the Atlantic Police Academy in Prince Edward Island.
The Correctional Officer Certificate program provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to work in provincial correctional facilities. Students learn how to monitor, supervise and interact with incarcerated offenders, developing the skills required to ensure the safety and well-being of inmates and colleagues. More information is provided in the backgrounder below.
The deadline to apply for the program is Friday, August 11, 2023. To be considered, all applicants must meet recruitment requirements, commit to a return in service agreement, and successfully complete all stages of the screening process. The Correctional Officer Certificate program at the Atlantic Police Academy begins in January 2024.
