COLLÈGE BORÉAL
Hands-on learning: Boréal students take part in mock crisis

April 24, 2019

Collège Boréal held a mock disaster training exercise at its main campus earlier today (4/18) in partnership with Paramedic Services representatives from the City of Greater Sudbury.

The biannual event allows Paramedic student to put their knowledge into practice and test their skills in the context of a staged emergency. Students from four area high schools enrolled in the Health and Wellness Specialist High Skills Major program also took part in the simulation. In total, approximately one hundred participants were on site.

This year, the event took place in Collège Boréal's welding lab. Paramedic students were put to the test as they responded to the scene, took part in patient triage, and assisted in crisis management. The students' ability to work under pressure and communicate effectively was assessed as part of the exercise.

A debriefing session following the mock disaster allowed participants to discuss the accident and emergency response techniques. The recap also allowed students to work through emotional issues potentially triggered by traumatic events.
