George Brown College Food Science Technologist Emily Lim helps bring new food ideas from concept to commercialization. Her efforts to help local businesses get new products on store shelves earned her a spot on the 2019 Ontario Hostelry Institute's (OHI) Top 30 under 30 for 2019 .
"When I first found out I had made the list, I was a little surprised as I hadn't expected it," says Lim. "After the initial shock, I felt very grateful and excited to have made the list. I was feeling a lot of support from the FIRSt team as well."
Working in the Food Research and Innovation Studio (FIRSt) at the Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts since 2017, Lim has led seven applied research projects, and been involved with nine more.
"A few notable clients include SoCIAL LITE Vodka, Healthy Crunch, Steeped Tea and Fuel Plus," says Lim's colleague Culinary Technologist Candace Rambert, who was also named an OHI Top 30 Under 30 in 2015 . "She's always proud to see the products she helped develop on shelves of major retailers. Emily's enthusiasm and determination are no doubt a large part of her success."
FIRSt provides technical resources, access to state-of-the-art facilities and networking opportunities for small to medium-sized businesses looking to bring food and beverage product ideas to stores. Lim has represented FIRSt at federal funding conferences, along with members of George Brown's senior management team, "to talk about her experience in college research, and to illustrate why it is an important aspect of experiential learning for college students," Rambert says
Congratulations to Lim and to Chris Palivan, Graduate, 2014, Special Event Management, Co-Founder and CEO of the Toronto Cider Festival who also made the OHI's 2019 Top 30 Under 30 list.
And a special shout-out, too, to Brandon Cebulak, General Manager of Chartwells at George Brown College, for also making the list!
