ÉSC l'Horizon student wins silver medal at Skills Canada national competition

June 6, 2024

Evan Lafontaine, a grade 12 student at École secondaire catholique l'Horizon (Val Caron), distinguished himself at the Skills Canada national competition by winning the silver medal in Precision Machining. Held in Quebec City on May 30 and 31, the competition gave many young Canadians the chance to compete in a national trades and technologies competition for students and apprentices.

After winning the gold medal in precision machining at the Skills Ontario competition held in Toronto on May 7, Evan qualified for this national competition. This student from ÉSC l'Horizon continued his success by claiming the silver medal at this national competition where he demonstrated his exceptional talent, his dedication and his passion for the skilled trades.

As part of the precision machining event, students were provided with the opportunity to demonstrate, through practical application, their skills and task knowledge in the industry relevant to safety standard as well as the use of a milling machine and engine lathe to produce a component. The skills and knowledge evaluated include the reading of drawings and job planning to produce a component in a timely fashion.

"Evan is an inspiration to all students at l'Horizon. Through his success at the provincial and national levels, Evan has shown us that hard work and perseverance pay off," explained Ms. Anik Ledo, Principal of École secondaire catholique l'Horizon.

"Evan's outstanding achievement at Skills Canada reflects the quality of the educational program provided to our students as well as the excellence of our teachers in the fields of trades and technology," stated Mr. Paul Henry, CSC Nouvelon Director of Education and Secretary Treasurer. "Our students have a truly well-earned reputation for excellence, and we take great pride in seeing one of our students shine at this high-level national competition."
