ALGOMA UNIVERSITY
Algoma University Welcomes New Students Through Re-Launched Student Refugee Program

August 28, 2025

The Local World University Service of Canada (WUSC) Committee has announced the re-launch of the Student Refugee Program (SRP) at Algoma University.

Starting in Fall 2025, Algoma University will welcome two new SRP students to the Sault Ste. Marie campus in the Cameron Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Business and Economics as part of one of the University's longest-running, student-funded initiatives.

The Local Committee includes members from Algoma University and the Algoma University Students' Union (AUSU), along with a dedicated Student Refugee Program Coordinator, Archana (Archie) Pathak, an upper-year Community Development student, who recently attended the WUSC National Training in Ottawa.

The National Training brings together representatives from WUSC Local Committees across the country to learn about refugee resettlement, intercultural communication, ethical volunteer engagement, and the broader context of migration and global development. It also provides networking opportunities, leadership development, and tools to strengthen campus-based initiatives.

"As a former WUSC-sponsored student and active member of the WUSC Committee, I see this program not only as a way to bring students to campus, but as a life-changing opportunity," said Evan Nooman, former WUSC Student and current Local Committee President. "It opens doors for personal growth and fosters a community that supports success academically, socially, and personally. My journey at Algoma University has shaped who I am today, and I am very grateful for this program. I hope to help as many future students as possible."

The WUSC is a Canadian non-profit that operates at the national, provincial/regional and local levels. It coordinates the Student Refugee Program in partnership with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Through academic and social support, WUSC Local Committees across the country help incoming refugee students adjust to life in Canada and integrate into campus life, supported by student levies, fundraising efforts, and community contributions.
