SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY
SPU Professor Philippe Bernier Arcand Wins Governor General Literary Award in Non-Fiction

November 17, 2023

Saint Paul University is proud to share that Philippe Bernier Arcand, Part-time Professors in the School of Social Communications, has been awarded the 2023 Non-Fiction Governor General Literary Award for his book Faux rebelles : Les dérives du « politiquement incorrect ».

In his book, Bernier Arcand combines historical background and sociological concepts to examine the phenomenon of certain right-wing movements who position themselves as "rebels" against the supposed hegemony of progressive thought. It is an important exploration of shifting identities and perceptions of ideology that is essential to the conversations and conflicts of our time.

"For me, the Governor General's Literary Award represents pride and recognition, but above all, it's an opportunity to spread the ideas I defend in my book, in particular the excesses of the politically incorrect and the need for vigilance in the face of the rise of the extreme right," shared Bernier Arcand. "I see this prize as a platform to give my essay a second wind, to plead for a genuine debate of ideas and to warn against the proliferation of hatred."

In their verdict, the peer assessment committee wrote:

"With a style that is both concise and clear and with solid reasoning, the author reveals the duplicity and excesses of those he calls false rebels. In these times of intellectual confusion and various tailspins, this crucial book comes at just the right time guarding against the proliferation of hate while it demands genuine debates."
