GRANDE PRAIRIE
Northwestern Polytechnic Generates More Community Buzz - New power engineering facility and programming will amp up local opportunity.

May 17, 2024

Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) is continuing to build an impressive Power Engineering and Instrumentation Controls presence in Grande Prairie.

In addition to expanding current training capacity with a $16 M state-of-the-art Power Engineering and Instrumentation Lab, Alberta's newest polytechnic announced the addition of a new two-year Power Engineering Technology Diploma that will commence Fall 2024.

"This new program offering has been carefully developed with the needs of our industry partners and surrounding communities in mind," says NWP President and CEO, Dr. Vanessa Sheane. "As our new Power Engineering and Instrumentation Laboratory continues to take shape, we are ensuring that we have the right programming mix to meet growing workforce demand."

To date, NWP has been limited to offering period 1 and 2 Instrumentation and Controls Technician apprenticeships due to space and equipment restrictions. However, the addition of a purpose-built, 15,565 sq. ft facility dedicated to innovation and training means new program additions, expanded local training capacity, and a more seamless journey from classroom to career.

"NWP's comprehensive new Power Engineering diploma program will empower students with the opportunity to study thermodynamics, electricity, electronics, refrigeration and air conditioning in a leading-edge learning environment," explains Dr. Brian Redmond, Dean for the School of Applied Science and Technology. "These aspiring Power Engineers will have access to the latest tools and technology as well as the benefit of hands-on experiences within an industry-replicated setting."

As the build within the NWP Grande Prairie campus progresses, industry and community members are being encouraged to be part of history.

"NWP is currently exploring legacy opportunities with the goal of creating shared value and enhancing the student experience," says Vice-President of External Relations, Cindy Park. "In the coming months we are hoping to secure more than $5 M in fundraising support through facility naming rights, sponsorships, and generous donations."

While commissioning of the new facility is on track for 2026, students won't have to wait to advance their career prospects. NWP's new Power Engineering Diploma program is now accepting applications.
