GREATER VICTORIA SCHOOL DISTRICT
Window Wanderland: Students connect community with charming artwork

February 2, 2023

James Bay Elementary is collaborating with the James Bay Community Centre to light up the neighbourhood during dark winter nights. Students are creating bright window displays to turn the streets into a public art gallery for the 5th annual Window Wanderland.

From Friday, February 24th to Sunday, February 26th from 6:00-9:00 p.m. each evening, the James Bay Community School and locals will turn the lights on to showcase their original pieces.

The community-led initiative invites citizens, businesses, and organizations within James Bay to decorate their windows with colourful and artistic displays, which the public can explore around the neighborhood in the evening to view. Students are contributing to the exhibit by decorating the school windows along Oswego Street.

In 2022, there were more than 80 registered windows that hundreds of people from James Bay and neighbouring areas, wandered around to enjoy. Those interested in participating this year, can register at: https://www.windowwanderland.com/event/james-bay-2023/.

For those looking for inspiration, volunteers are hosting window design workshops with supplies available at James Bay New Horizons on the following dates:

  • Saturday, February 4, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, February 11, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, February 18, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

The Window Wanderland project originated in 2015 in the UK and has inspired communities to come together and decorate windows to create an evening display for everyone to enjoy. For more information on the history of the event, visit: https://www.windowwanderland.com/.
