Reading is a fundamental human right.
In the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), we're supporting the needs of every student as they develop the literacy skills they need to succeed in learning and in life.
The WRDSB Approach to Literacy Education
The Structured Literacy Multi-Year Plan
Our Structured Literacy Multi-Year Plan (SLMYP) provides educators across the system with strategies to support students in learning to read and write. This approach means students' learning continues seamlessly, year to year.
The SLYMP builds on the Ontario Human Rights Commission's Right to Read Report. The report marked a significant milestone and affirms literacy as a fundamental human right. However, the WRDSB's work to provide the highest quality literacy education for students began before the release of this report and alongside:
- Educators
- Staff
- Parents, families and caregivers

Evidence-Based Strategies for Each Student
Reading is a key skill for student success. To support students, we use evidence-based tools to screen the reading skills of students in:
- Senior Kindergarten
- Grade 1
- Grade 2
