LE Shaw Student Art Celebrates Mi'kmaq Culture and History

October 24, 2016

Students at LE Shaw Elementary have been celebrating Mi'kmaq culture and history this month through art projects led by teacher Olivia Frampton. Grade 2 and 3 students created sashes using the four colours--red, yellow, white and black learning about their significance as part of the medicine wheel, and how each colour corresponds with the directions (North, South, East and West), elements of the Earth, and parts of our well-being.

Grade 4 and 5 students have studied the petroglyphs ancient rock carvings that can be found throughout Mi'kma'ki. They learned that these carvings are a history written in stone, created by Mi'kmaq peoples who have lived on this land for many thousands of years. Many of the carvings depict important legends and symbols, people, activities, animals, and significant events. Using the petroglyphs as inspiration, students created watercolour paintings to display in the school gallery this month.
