TWU Geography department creates cycling trail maps using GIS software, helps local school organize bike to school event

October 14, 2021

TWU's Geography department sponsored James Kennedy Elementary (JKE) School's Fall Bike to School Day on Friday, October 1, 2021.

This Bike to School Day in Langley was the first ever to feature "bike trains" planned from four locations around JKE, explained Associate Professor of Geography Dr. Geraldine Jordan.

Participants were invited to meet at 8:15 a.m. at any of the four locations, and ride to school together. A volunteer followed each group, to bring up the back of each bike train.

The groups then rode back to each of these locations after school dismissal in the afternoon.

Students who participated in Bike to School Day were entered into a draw for fun prizes.

Dr. Jordan and her colleagues in the Geography department used GIS software to create cycling route maps, which were distributed to JKE students and families. TWU also sponsored the printing of the maps.

During June's Bike to School week, which TWU had similarly supported, Dr. Jordan had commented, "When we think of humanity's impact on the planet, and how we are overstretching almost all the ecological resources and the biocapacity of the planet, creating a smaller transportation and mobility footprint is one really important key to sustainability."

"Cycling, walking and rolling are all ways that we can use to contribute to meeting United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, such as creating sustainable mobility in cities and addressing climate change," she continued.

Activities like Bike to School Day are "part of a much larger picture of contributing to human and planetary well-being, both in the present and for the future," Dr. Jordan said.
