THAMES VALLEY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Students Medal at Canada and World Science & Engineering Fairs

June 20, 2018

Nine students from Thames Valley represented Youth Science London's Thames Valley Science and Engineering Fair (TVSEF) at the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF) in Ottawa, and won several awards.

In addition, two Thames Valley students who won at last year's Canada Wide event represented Canada as part of a team of eight at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), held in Pittsburgh.

At the CWSF, grade 11 student Amal Aziz from Sir Wilfred Laurier S.S., won a gold medal, a $1000 Youth Can Innovate Award, and scholarships to Canadian universities with her project, "A Switchable, Dual-Functioning Trojan Horse for Alzheimer's Disease Phototherapy". David Wu, a grade 11 student at London Central S.S., won a bronze medal and several university scholarships with his project, "The Efficacy of Cancer Chemotherapy Combinations with Cranberry Extract".

The ISEF event is considered to be the Olympics of Science and Engineering Fairs. Grade 9 student Danish Mahmood from London Central S.S., was awarded second place and $1500 (US) for his project "W.I.N.I.T.S. (Wireless Interconnected Non-Invasive Triage System)".  Oakridge S.S. student Waleed Sawan, won a third place award of $1000 (US) and a Qatar Foundation, Research & Development award of $1000 (US) for his project "Drip - A Precision Agriculture System for the Developing World".

"Science Fairs provide me with an experience of a lifetime to succeed not only in my school and studies, but at an early age, and to experience and develop real-life skills that will serve me throughout my life," says Waleed. "My experiences at international, national, and regional science fairs have inspired me to pursue my studies in Engineering and offered me the opportunity to meet like-minded students from around Canada and the world."

Youth Science London's Science and Engineering Fair is a very competitive event. Students representing our region go on to compete against 500 other students from across Canada.  We are very proud of all our participants at our local fair, CWSF and ISEF.

A full list of winners from our region for the local, national and international fairs can be found at tvsef.ca.
