OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD
Victory at the Girls Who Game STEM Esports Event

March 13, 2024

As we celebrate International Women's Day, we're thrilled to announce the outstanding achievement of our Girls Who Game (GWG) team, the Creative Bunnies! Ainsley and Bronwyn, the duo from Blessed Carlos Virtual School, demonstrated exceptional talent, teamwork, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) expertise, placing first at the GWG STEM Esports Event.

Empowering Through Gaming

The GWG program provides female students with the ability to explore STEM-related fields through gaming. The program gives students the opportunity to hone their gaming abilities while also developing critical skills such as teamwork, computation thinking, and problem-solving.

The GWG STEM Esport offers female students the chance to sharpen their STEM skills while engaging in competitive gaming. Using Minecraft: Education Edition, teams tackle STEM challenges in an Esports tournament format. Judges from tech companies and Esports organizations evaluate teams based on their innovative solutions and STEM connections.

The Triumph of the Creative Bunnies

Because they were a small team, the Creative Bunnies were paired with another team from the United States whom they had never met. The duo overcame this hurdle, demonstrating exceptional communication and teamwork with their newly assigned teammates throughout the event. Their ability to swiftly and creatively respond to STEM challenges led them to victory in all 10-minute challenges. With judges closely observing their progress, Ainsley and Bronwyn showcased their expertise in Minecraft coding and problem-solving, securing their well-deserved first-place finish.

Looking Ahead

In preparation for an upcoming tournament on May 11th, the Creative Bunnies plan to expand their team and welcome more girls into the world of esports. They remain dedicated to honing their skills through consistent practices in Minecraft: Education Edition. These practice sessions serve not only to sharpen their gameplay but also to familiarize new members with the competition format. Through their dedication and perseverance, the Creative Bunnies aspire to not only retain their championship status but also to serve as inspiring role models for young women interested in STEM.
